This course focuses on case law and the practice of human rights in criminal justice in the internal context. One of the primary goals of this course is the examination of the impact of international institutions, policies and law on protection of human rights of accused and victims in developing countries. The course also discusses current human rights problems in criminal justice systems of developing states such as government’s intrusion in private life; racism and xenophobia against ethnic minorities, police ill‐treatment, and fair trial violations. It also explores existing and potential solutions to these problems. The class compares international human rights standards with standards existing in Canadian criminal law and procedure.
